How Rajaji Safari Gates and Reporting Points Work
A Rajaji safari does not start at whichever gate is most convenient on the day. Your entry depends on the safari zone, permit or booking record, operating status and reporting point assigned for that departure. The gate name should be part of your written confirmation.
Rajaji National Park and Rajaji Tiger Reserve cover several landscapes around Haridwar, Rishikesh and the wider Dehradun side. Chilla, Motichur, Ranipur, Jhilmil, Andheri and Gohri are not interchangeable entries. A booking for one route does not automatically allow entry through another.
Match the Reporting Point to Your Confirmed Zone
Chilla: Chilla is commonly considered by visitors staying around Haridwar and Rishikesh. The route is popular for its varied forest, riverine and grassland landscapes. Confirm the exact reporting location rather than relying on a hotel’s general description of “Chilla.”
Motichur: Motichur is associated with denser sal forest, foothill terrain and routes on the Haridwar–Dehradun side. The most useful question is not simply how far it is from your hotel, but which reporting point and access road apply to your confirmed safari.
Ranipur: Ranipur offers a more rugged setting and may be practical for visitors approaching from the Haridwar side. Ask whether the current operation uses the route you have been quoted and where the vehicle will meet you.
Jhilmil: Jhilmil has a wetland character and different access considerations from the main forest zones. Seasonal operations and reporting arrangements can change, so verify the active gate and reporting time before travelling.
Andheri, Gohri, Satyanarayan and Kansro: These quieter routes may have separate permissions, limited operations or current-access conditions. Treat them as route-specific requests, not as automatic alternatives to a standard zone booking.
What to Check Before Leaving Your Hotel
- Ask for the exact zone and reporting-point name in writing.
- Save the map pin and confirm whether the pin marks the gate, parking area or a meeting point.
- Check the reporting time, not only the safari start time.
- Ask who will meet you and whether pickup from your hotel is included.
- Carry the original government-issued photo ID required for the booking.
- Reconfirm the route if weather, road conditions or Forest Department instructions change.
Why the Gate Matters More Than a Small Distance Difference
Arriving at the wrong gate can mean missing the reporting window even when the two locations look close on a map. A safari vehicle may also be authorised for a particular zone or entry record. This is why a reliable booking confirmation should show the zone, gate, reporting time, vehicle details and a contact number.
Do not change the reporting point based on advice from an unrelated driver or hotel desk without checking with the booking team. If the Forest Department changes an operating arrangement, ask for the updated instruction in writing.

- Start with your accommodation and preferred travel direction.
- Choose a zone that fits your interests, such as open riverine habitat, dense forest or wetland birding.
- Ask the booking team which entry point is currently operating for that zone.
- Compare the reporting time with your planned arrival and return journey.
- Confirm the final gate only after availability and permit details are clear.
