Jungle Safari in Dehradun: Motichur, Ramgarh and What Is Official

There is no jungle safari inside Dehradun city. The Dehradun-side Rajaji gates are Motichur, Chillawali/Mohand and the provisional Ramgarh/Asharodi gate — what each official page publishes on location, distances, season and the booking flow — checked 30 Oct 2026.

Jungle Safari in Dehradun: Motichur, Ramgarh and What Is Official

A visitor typing “jungle safari in Dehradun” usually expects a park gate inside the city, or a zoo with a safari ride attached. Neither exists on the official record. The reserve’s own pages, checked on 30 October 2026, publish no safari inside Dehradun city and no city safari product. What Dehradun does have is proximity: three official gates are relevant to a Dehradun stay — Motichur, Chillawali/Mohand and the provisional Ramgarh/Asharodi gate — each with its own official page, its own address and its own published distances. This page sets out what those pages say, and nothing beyond them.

Sources checked on 30 October 2026: the reserve’s official About page for the reserve’s size, extent, zone counts and season; the official zone pages for Motichur, Chillawali/Mohand and Ramgarh/Asharodi; and the official jungle safari booking page for the season and the permit flow. No travel website or operator page is used as a source here.

What “Dehradun” means on the reserve’s own pages

The About page gives the reserve in numbers: a national park of 820.42 sq km, plus 255.63 sq km of reserve forest added in 2015, making a tiger reserve of roughly 1,075 sq km. It describes the reserve as spreading across the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts — a geography that places the reserve in those districts rather than a park inside Dehradun city. The same page describes five jeep safari zones and treats Chaurasi Kutiya as a heritage site rather than a jeep zone, and it publishes the season as 15 November to 15 June, with the reserve closed from 16 June to 14 November.

For a Dehradun stay, the practical consequence is simple: the booking is for a named zone gate outside the city, reached by road on safari morning. There is no “Dehradun park” to select on the portal, and no city attraction that substitutes for the drive.

Motichur: the Dehradun-Haridwar highway gate

The Motichur page places the gate and office on the Dehradun-Haridwar national highway near the Motichur overbridge, and gives the zone an area of 90 sq km. The distances that page publishes are Jolly Grant at about 35 km, Dehradun at about 55 km and Delhi at about 224 km. Those are the reserve’s own figures, reproduced here as printed; the page publishes no drive time, and none is invented on this one. Our gates and zones guide sets the gate in the wider set, and the three-city route guide covers approaching the reserve from Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh together.

Chillawali/Mohand: the Delhi-highway counter

The Chillawali page places the ticket counter and range office at Mohand on the Delhi-Dehradun highway near Ganeshpur, and the official location line is Mohand, Haridwar. Its published distances are Jolly Grant at about 48 km, Dehradun at about 25 km and Delhi at about 251 km. The page itself makes no ranking claim, and neither does this one; the Ramgarh page gives a shorter Dehradun distance but is provisional.

Ramgarh/Asharodi: provisional, and quoted as such

The Ramgarh page places the Asharodi gate on the Dehradun-Mohand-Saharanpur-Delhi highway and publishes distances of Jolly Grant at about 30 km, Dehradun at about 5 km and Delhi at about 250 km. Its own wording, however, says the gate is “likely to be thrown open to tourists”. That is provisional language, quoted here exactly as written. This page does not present Ramgarh as a confirmed operating gate: the official portal will only sell what is actually open, and a reader should treat that portal’s live calendar — not any listing — as the operating record.

Season, booking and the permit

The safari season runs 15 November to 15 June, and the reserve is closed from 16 June to 14 November. The official booking portal works in a fixed order: choose the date, then the zone, then the shift, then enter visitor details, pay, and print the permit. The permit names the zone, so the gate chosen online is the gate to drive to. For the wider fee and timing picture, our entry fees, timings and permits guide sets out what the official pages publish, and the safari booking guide walks the portal itself.

Distances, drive times and what will not be invented

The three zone pages print distances to Jolly Grant, Dehradun and Delhi. They do not print a Dehradun-to-gate drive time, and no official Dehradun-to-gate drive time was located on 30 October 2026 — so none appears here. A reader wanting that figure should measure it on a map from the chosen gate’s official address, the same way any local would. What the official record supports is the distance line, quoted exactly, and the address of the counter or gate to report to.

One category of claim is also deliberately absent: a Dehradun city safari product. The official pages checked publish none for Dehradun, and none is asserted here. Malsi Deer Park is a separate zoo and deer-park attraction in the city, not a safari, and our zoo near Haridwar and Rishikesh page covers that distinction and the honest negative for the other two cities.

What to confirm before booking from a Dehradun stay

Four confirmations come out of reading the official pages on 30 October 2026. First, choose a real zone name from the portal’s own list — Motichur, Chillawali, and Ramgarh only if the live calendar actually offers it — rather than a search phrase, since search phrases are exactly where invented distances and drive times live. Second, take the gate or counter address from the zone page or the printed permit, not from a listing title; Motichur’s gate and office sit on the Dehradun-Haridwar national highway near the Motichur overbridge, and Chillawali’s ticket counter and range office sit at Mohand near Ganeshpur, so the address on the permit is the binding one. Third, remember that the published distances run to Jolly Grant, Dehradun and Delhi — no official drive time exists for any of them, so route planning on the morning is the traveller’s own, with an early start the prudent assumption. Fourth, treat Ramgarh as provisional until the portal’s own calendar offers it, because the zone page’s “likely to be thrown open to tourists” wording is not an operating notice.

Where to read next

For the whole official set of gates, start with the safari gates and zones guide; for reaching the reserve from the three cities together, the three-city route guide. The city-level companions are jungle safari in Haridwar and jungle safari in Rishikesh, and jungle safari across Uttarakhand places Rajaji beside Corbett and Nandhaur.

Jungle safari in Dehradun: questions answered

Is there a jungle safari inside Dehradun city?

No. The official Rajaji pages checked on 30 October 2026 publish no safari and no city safari product inside Dehradun city. The reserve’s About page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/About.aspx, describes a tiger reserve spanning the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts, and the jeep safaris are run from the reserve’s gates, which lie outside the city. A visitor staying in Dehradun books a named zone gate on the official portal, not a city attraction.

Which Rajaji gates serve a Dehradun stay?

Three official zone pages are relevant to a Dehradun stay. The Motichur page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/motichur-zone.aspx, places the gate and office on the Dehradun-Haridwar national highway near the Motichur overbridge, with an area of 90 sq km. The Chillawali page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chillawali-zone.aspx, puts the ticket counter and range office at Mohand on the Delhi-Dehradun highway near Ganeshpur. The Ramgarh page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/ramgarh-zone.aspx, places the Asharodi gate on the Dehradun-Mohand-Saharanpur-Delhi highway, with provisional wording. Which gate suits a stay depends on the route; the official pages do not rank them.

How far is Motichur from Dehradun?

The official Motichur page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/motichur-zone.aspx, publishes distances of Jolly Grant at about 35 km, Dehradun at about 55 km and Delhi at about 224 km. It publishes no Dehradun-to-gate drive time, and no official drive time was located on 30 October 2026, so none is supplied here.

Is the Ramgarh/Asharodi gate open for safaris?

This page does not present it as confirmed. The official Ramgarh page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/ramgarh-zone.aspx, says the gate is “likely to be thrown open to tourists” — provisional wording, quoted as written — and publishes distances of Jolly Grant at about 30 km, Dehradun at about 5 km and Delhi at about 250 km. The official portal will only sell what is actually open, so treat its live calendar as the operating record.

When does the safari season run, and how is a permit booked?

The season runs from 15 November to 15 June, and the reserve is closed from 16 June to 14 November. The official booking portal, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/jungle-safari-booking.aspx, works in the order date, then zone, then shift, then visitor details, then payment, after which the permit is printed. The permit names the zone, so the gate chosen on that portal is the gate that is driven to.
