Jungle Safari in Rishikesh: Chaurasi Kutiya, Not a City Park

Rishikesh city has no national park and no official jeep-safari product. The only Rajaji zone the official pages list at Rishikesh is Chaurasi Kutiya — a heritage walk, open year-round, at ₹150 per Indian and ₹600 per foreigner, with no vehicle fee. Jeep safaris leave from Rajaji gates outside the city. What a Rishikesh stay can actually book, and from which gate — checked 29 Oct 2026.

Jungle Safari in Rishikesh: Chaurasi Kutiya, Not a City Park

Rishikesh attracts a visitor who hears “jungle safari” and assumes the park begins where the ghats end. It does not. No national park lies inside Rishikesh city on any official page checked on 29 October 2026; Rajaji Tiger Reserve sits at the city’s edge, and the jeep safaris run from gates outside the city. What Rishikesh does have, officially, is one Rajaji zone of its own — Chaurasi Kutiya, the Beatles Ashram heritage site, which is a walk, not a jeep ride. This page sets out what a Rishikesh stay can actually book, from where, and what the official pages do and do not say.

Sources checked on 29 October 2026: the reserve’s About page for the reserve’s extent and the “lungs of Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh” description; the official Chaurasi Kutiya zone page for location, year-round opening and charges; Uttarakhand Tourism’s Rishikesh page and Incredible India’s Beatles Ashram page for what the visit involves; the official zone pages for Chilla and Motichur; and the booking portal. No operator or travel-blog page is used as a source.

What the official pages say about Rishikesh

The reserve’s About page describes Rajaji as the lungs of Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh and says the reserve spans the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts. It does not say a national park is inside Rishikesh city, and no other official source checked here says so either. The accurate description — the one this page uses throughout — is that Rajaji lies at Rishikesh’s edge.

The one official zone the reserve lists at Rishikesh is Chaurasi Kutiya. Its zone page reads, in the reserve’s own words, “Chaurasi Kutiya Zone Location Rishikesh, Uttarakhand”, and adds that “Chaurasi Kuti is always open for tourists throughout the year.” The charges that page prints are 150 rupees per person for Indians and 600 rupees per foreigner for the Beatles Ashram visit, with a vehicle fee of zero. Those are the reserve’s published figures, quoted exactly.

What Chaurasi Kutiya actually is

It is a heritage walk, and the tourism pages describe it as one. Uttarakhand Tourism’s Rishikesh page tells visitors they can walk around the ashram ruins. Incredible India’s page describes a steep pathway up to the site, the ashram’s beehive huts and long corridors, and timings of 10 AM to 4 PM. All of that is a day visit on foot through an abandoned ashram complex. It is not a jeep safari, no vehicle goes into it, and the official pages do not present it as a wildlife drive.

One caveat, handled carefully. The Chaurasi Kutiya page says it is open throughout the year, and no official closure notice was located on 29 October 2026. Social posts have circulated claims of a renovation closure running to February 2027; this page does not repeat those as fact, because no official source checked here carries them. The honest advice is the one the gap demands: confirm current access before travelling.

Where jeep safaris actually leave from

Every jeep gate the reserve lists is outside Rishikesh city, on the reserve’s other edges. Two mislabelings are worth disarming before they cause a wrong booking.

  • Chilla is not “the Rishikesh gate”. Its official location line reads “District Pauri Garhwal, Near Haridwar”, and the approach it describes comes from Haridwar on NH-58, after the long Ganga bridge from Chandi Gate/Ghat, then right on to the Chilla power channel road. Operators often market it to Rishikesh guests; the official page does not.
  • Motichur’s Rishikesh mention is a rail line, not a gate designation. The Motichur page places the gate and office on the Dehradun-Haridwar national highway near the Motichur overbridge, and lists Rishikesh among the nearest railway stations. That is transport connectivity, not a zone named for the city.

The other gates stand as their own pages describe them: the Haridwar/Ranipur zone near BHEL, Ranipur; Chillawali with its ticket counter and range office at Mohand on the Delhi-Dehradun highway near Ganeshpur; and Ramgarh/Asharodi, whose page says only that it is “likely to be thrown open to tourists” — provisional wording that this page quotes rather than upgrades to a confirmed operating gate. Our gates and zones guide sets out the whole official set.

The distances the official pages do publish

Each zone page prints distances to Jolly Grant, Dehradun and Delhi — not to Rishikesh. From Jolly Grant: Chilla about 40 km, Motichur about 35 km, the Haridwar/Ranipur zone about 30 km, Chillawali about 48 km, Ramgarh about 30 km. No official Rishikesh-to-gate distance or drive time was located on 29 October 2026, and none is invented here; a reader wanting that figure should measure it on a map from the chosen gate’s official address. Our three-city safari guide covers approaching the reserve from Rishikesh alongside Haridwar and Dehradun.

Season and booking

Jeep safaris run 15 November to 15 June, with the reserve closed 16 June to 14 November. Chaurasi Kutiya, officially, is year-round. The official portal takes a date, then a zone, then a shift, then visitor details, then payment, and the printed permit names that zone — there is no “Rishikesh park” product to select, because none exists on the official pages. There is likewise no official source for a Rishikesh deer park or zoo; none is asserted here. The booking guide and the Chaurasi-versus-jeep comparison go deeper on each side of that choice, and the Beatles Ashram guide covers the heritage visit itself. Our Rishikesh adventure combo guide covers that city-side combination on the same official-source basis.

What to confirm before booking from a Rishikesh stay

Because the official pages publish no Rishikesh-origin figures and no Rishikesh product, four confirmations come out of reading them on 29 October 2026. First, choose a real zone name from the portal’s own list — Chilla, Motichur, Haridwar/Ranipur, Chillawali — rather than a search phrase, since search phrases are exactly where the invented “Rishikesh gate” language lives. Second, take the gate address from the zone page or the printed permit, not from a listing title; the permit’s zone field is the binding one. Third, remember that the published distances run from Jolly Grant and that no official Rishikesh-to-gate distance exists, so route planning is the traveller’s own. Fourth, for Chaurasi Kutiya, confirm current access with the site before setting out, given the gap between the official year-round wording and informal claims of closure. None of these steps requires any source beyond the reserve’s own pages, which is the point.

Where to read next

For the Haridwar side of the same question, read jungle safari in Haridwar, which covers Chilla and the Ranipur zone in detail; and for the wider state menu, jungle safari across Uttarakhand, which places Rajaji beside Corbett and Nandhaur without choosing between them.

Jungle safari in Rishikesh: questions answered

Is there a national park inside Rishikesh city?

No official source checked on 29 October 2026 says a national park sits inside Rishikesh city. The reserve’s About page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/About.aspx, calls Rajaji the lungs of Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh and says the reserve spans the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts. The safe description, and the one used on this page, is that Rajaji lies at Rishikesh’s edge.

What can a Rishikesh visitor officially book inside the city?

One thing: Chaurasi Kutiya. Its official page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chaurasi-kutiya-zone.aspx, reads “Chaurasi Kutiya Zone Location Rishikesh, Uttarakhand” and says Chaurasi Kuti is always open for tourists throughout the year. The charges the reserve publishes are 150 rupees per person for Indians and 600 rupees per foreigner for the Beatles Ashram visit, with a vehicle fee of zero. It is a heritage walk among the ashram ruins, not a jeep safari, and no jeep safari departs from inside Rishikesh city.

Is Chilla the Rishikesh safari gate?

No, and the official pages do not support calling it that. The Chilla page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chilla-zone.aspx, lists the location as “District Pauri Garhwal, Near Haridwar” and describes the approach from Haridwar on NH-58, after the long Ganga bridge from Chandi Gate/Ghat, then right on to the Chilla power channel road. The Motichur page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/motichur-zone.aspx, does mention Rishikesh, but in its list of nearest railway stations, which is a transport link rather than a gate designation.

How far are the safari gates from Rishikesh?

The official zone pages publish distances from Jolly Grant, not from Rishikesh: Chilla about 40 km, Motichur about 35 km, the Haridwar/Ranipur zone about 30 km, Chillawali about 48 km and Ramgarh about 30 km. No official Rishikesh-to-gate distance or drive time was located on 29 October 2026, so none is given here; the Chilla page is at https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chilla-zone.aspx and the Ranipur page at https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/haridwar-zone.aspx.

When can jeeps go, and when can Chaurasi Kutiya be visited?

Jeep safaris run from 15 November to 15 June and the reserve is closed from 16 June to 14 November, bookable on the official portal, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/jungle-safari-booking.aspx. Chaurasi Kutiya is different: its official page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chaurasi-kutiya-zone.aspx, says it is always open for tourists throughout the year, and no official closure notice was located on 29 October 2026. Because informal posts have claimed a renovation closure, confirm current access with the site before travelling rather than relying on social claims.
