Jungle Safari in Haridwar: Chilla, Ranipur and What Is Official

There is no jungle safari inside Haridwar city. The jeep safaris that serve a Haridwar stay run from Rajaji gates outside or adjacent to it: Chilla, officially “District Pauri Garhwal, Near Haridwar”, is approached from Haridwar, and the Haridwar/Ranipur zone carries the city’s name. Which gate suits a Haridwar stay, the official distances, season and booking flow — checked 29 Oct 2026.

Jungle Safari in Haridwar: Chilla, Ranipur and What Is Official

A search for a jungle safari in Haridwar usually lands on a page promising a city attraction that does not exist. There is no zoo or city safari inside Haridwar on the official Rajaji pages, and this page does not invent one. What does exist is Rajaji Tiger Reserve, whose own About page says the reserve spreads across the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts, and whose jeep safaris run from gates outside or next to the city. The question a Haridwar stay actually needs answered is narrower and more useful: which official gate or zone serves the stay, and which of the things said about it online is official rather than operator shorthand.

Sources checked on 29 October 2026: the reserve’s official About page for the reserve’s size, extent and zone counts; the official zone pages for Chilla, Haridwar/Ranipur, Motichur, Chillawali/Mohand and Ramgarh/Asharodi; and the official jungle safari booking page for the season and the permit flow. No travel website or operator page is used as a source here.

What “Haridwar” means on the reserve’s own pages

The About page gives the reserve in numbers: a national park of 820.42 sq km, plus 255.63 sq km of reserve forest added in 2015, making a tiger reserve of roughly 1,075 sq km. It describes the reserve, in its own phrase, as the lungs of Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh — a line worth noting, because it places the park in relation to all three cities rather than inside any of them.

The same page creates one honest discrepancy that a careful reader should know about. The About text describes five jeep safari zones and treats Chaurasi Kutiya as a heritage site; the reserve’s homepage lists six day-visit zones. This page reports both counts rather than picking one, and it does not describe Chaurasi Kutiya as a jeep zone under either counting. For a Haridwar stay the jeep zones are the ones that matter, and each is named on its own official zone page, which prints its own location and approach.

Chilla: the zone with a Haridwar approach

The Chilla zone page lists the location as “District Pauri Garhwal, Near Haridwar”, on the east bank of the Ganga, with an area of 249 sq km. The gate, reception and forest rest house are described as being on the roadside. The approach the page gives runs from Haridwar on NH-58, just after the long Ganga bridge when coming from Chandi Gate/Ghat, then right on to the Chilla power channel road.

What the page does not give is a Haridwar-to-Chilla distance or drive time, and none is supplied here — that is precisely the kind of figure that gets invented across aggregator sites. The distances the official page does publish are to Jolly Grant at about 40 km, Dehradun at about 55 km, and Delhi at about 224 km via NH 334. A reader can take from that only what the official record supports: Chilla is the Rajaji zone whose own page is written around a Haridwar approach, and nothing further is stated.

The Haridwar/Ranipur zone

The zone the reserve publishes under the Haridwar name is a separate gate. Its page places the Ranipur forest rest house near the Ranipur entry gate, near BHEL, Ranipur, and gives its own distances: Jolly Grant about 30 km, Dehradun about 60 km, Delhi about 250 km. For a stay on the BHEL side of the city this is the zone whose official description is nearest in name and address; the page itself makes no ranking claim, and neither does this one. Our which-gate guide weighs the choice between gates in more detail.

Motichur, Chillawali/Mohand, and the provisional Ramgarh gate

Three other gates appear in the official set, each with its own page. Motichur is described as near Dehradun and Haridwar, with an area of 90 sq km, its gate and office on the Dehradun-Haridwar national highway near the Motichur overbridge; its published distances are Jolly Grant about 35 km, Dehradun about 55 km and Delhi about 224 km. Chillawali is at Mohand, Haridwar, on the Dehradun-Saharanpur highway, with the ticket counter and range office at Mohand on the Delhi-Dehradun highway near Ganeshpur; distances are Jolly Grant about 48 km, Dehradun about 25 km and Delhi about 251 km.

Ramgarh/Asharodi needs a caveat rather than a recommendation. Its page places the Asharodi gate at Dehradun on the Dehradun-Mohand-Saharanpur-Delhi highway, and its own wording says the gate is “likely to be thrown open to tourists”. That is provisional language, quoted here exactly as written. A reader should not treat Ramgarh as a confirmed operating gate on the strength of this or any operator page; the official portal will only sell what is actually open.

Season, booking and the permit

The safari season runs 15 November to 15 June, and the reserve is closed from 16 June to 14 November. The official booking portal works in a fixed order: choose the date, then the zone, then the shift, then enter visitor details, pay, and print the permit. The permit names the zone, so the gate chosen online is the gate to drive to. For the wider fee and timing picture, our entry fees, timings and permits guide sets out what the official pages publish, and the safari booking guide walks the portal itself. Our three-city safari guide covers reaching the reserve from Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun together.

What is not a Haridwar safari

Two things commonly folded into a “Haridwar safari” search do not belong there. First, Jhilmil Jheel is a separate conservation reserve and does not appear on the reserve’s current official day-visit zone list, though some operators list it alongside the Rajaji zones; our Jhilmil Jheel guide covers it on that basis. Second, there is no official source for a Haridwar zoo or city safari product — the pages checked publish none, so this page asserts none. Malsi Deer Park, sometimes mentioned in this context, is a Dehradun address and is not mapped into Haridwar here.

Where to read next

For the full official set of gates and what each page prints, start with the safari gates and zones guide; for the stay-based question, which gate to choose. Visitors staying across the state line will want jungle safari in Rishikesh, which covers what a Rishikesh stay can actually book, and jungle safari across Uttarakhand, which sets Rajaji beside Corbett and Nandhaur.

Jungle safari in Haridwar: questions answered

Is there a jungle safari inside Haridwar city?

No. The official Rajaji pages checked on 29 October 2026 publish no zoo or city safari product for Haridwar. The reserve’s own About page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/About.aspx, describes a tiger reserve spanning the Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts, and the jeep safaris are run from the reserve’s gates, which lie outside or adjacent to the city rather than inside it. A visitor staying in Haridwar books a Rajaji zone gate on the official portal, not a Haridwar city attraction.

Which Rajaji gate actually serves a Haridwar stay?

Two official zone pages speak directly to Haridwar. The Chilla page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chilla-zone.aspx, lists the location as “District Pauri Garhwal, Near Haridwar” and describes an approach from Haridwar on NH-58. The Haridwar zone page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/haridwar-zone.aspx, places the Ranipur forest rest house near the Ranipur entry gate, near BHEL, Ranipur. Motichur is described as near Dehradun and Haridwar, Chillawali is at Mohand on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, and the Ramgarh page is worded provisionally. Which gate suits a stay depends on where the stay is; the official pages do not rank them.

How far is Chilla from Haridwar?

The official Chilla page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/chilla-zone.aspx, does not publish a Haridwar-to-Chilla distance or drive time, and this page does not supply one. What that page does publish are distances to Jolly Grant at about 40 km, Dehradun at about 55 km and Delhi at about 224 km via NH 334, together with the approach: from Haridwar on NH-58, just after the long Ganga bridge coming from Chandi Gate/Ghat, then right on to the Chilla power channel road, where the gate, reception and forest rest house stand on the roadside.

Is Chaurasi Kutiya a jeep safari zone?

No. The reserve’s About page, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/About.aspx, describes five jeep safari zones and treats Chaurasi Kutiya as a heritage site, and the Chaurasi Kutiya zone page presents it as an ashram heritage visit rather than a drive. The reserve’s homepage lists six day-visit zones in total, so readers comparing the two official pages will see a five-plus-heritage and a six-zone counting; under either, Chaurasi Kutiya is not a jeep gate.

When does the safari season run, and how is a permit booked?

The season runs from 15 November to 15 June, and the reserve is closed from 16 June to 14 November. The official booking portal, https://rajajitigerreserve.uk.gov.in/jungle-safari-booking.aspx, works in the order date, then zone, then shift, then visitor details, then payment, after which the permit is printed. The permit names the zone, so the gate chosen on that portal is the gate that is driven to.
