Rajaji National Park does not have one front door. The official reserve describes five jeep safari zones or ranges for day visits, and each one is entered from its own reporting gate. The zone you select when booking determines the gate, and the gate determines the road you drive on and the city your transfer starts from.
This article maps the five jeep safari entries to their published locations and then explains the one attraction that looks like a zone on the list but is not one. Charges are not repeated here; the official portal displays the current figures during booking.
How zone selection becomes a gate
The official Rajaji Tiger Reserve booking page walks through the sequence: select the date, select a zone, select the shift, enter visitor and group leader details, pay, receive the day visit ticket and print the permit. The zone chosen at step two is the zone named on the printed permit, and that name is what the gate officer checks.
The reserve also states that the safari vehicle operates from the relative gate. In other words, the vehicle is arranged for the entry that matches your zone, not for whichever gate is closest to your hotel. Choose the zone that your group can realistically reach, then book the transfer to that same gate.
Arrival timing at every gate
The official booking page advises reaching the gate 20 minutes before the last entry timing. It also warns that visitors arriving late, after the last entry time, may not be entertained and that deposited fees are not refunded. This applies to all zones equally, so the buffer should be built around the specific gate rather than the city centre.
The five jeep safari zones and their gates
Chilla zone gate
The official Chilla zone page places the zone in Pauri Garhwal district, near Haridwar. It is one of the zones listed on the official day visit booking page, and it is the entry associated with the Haridwar side of the reserve. A Chilla permit is reported at the Chilla gate.
Motichur zone gate
The official Motichur zone page describes the zone as near Dehradun and Haridwar, with its gate on the Dehradun-Haridwar highway. That highway position is why Motichur often works for visitors staying on either side of the road link, as long as the transfer time to the gate is realistic for the shift.
Haridwar (Ranipur) zone gate
The official Haridwar zone page names Ranipur Forest Rest House near BHEL as the reference point for this entry. It is the zone listed as Haridwar on the day visit booking page, so a permit issued for this zone is reported from this entry.
Chillawali (Mohand) zone gate
The official Chillawali zone page locates the entry at Mohand on the Dehradun-Saharanpur highway. Visitors based in Dehradun who are heading toward that side of the landscape use this entry, and the highway reference is the useful landmark when plotting the drive.
Ramgarh (Asharodi) zone gate
The official Ramgarh zone page describes the Asharodi gate near Dehradun. This is the entry for the Ramgarh side of the reserve, on the Dehradun end of the landscape.
Chaurasi Kutiya is not a jeep safari zone
The booking list also shows Chaurasi Kutiya, better known as the Beatles Ashram. It is published by the reserve as its own day visit attraction and is explored on foot. It does not have a jeep safari drive attached to it, and it is not one of the five jeep safari zones described above.
That distinction prevents a common booking error: selecting Chaurasi Kutiya expecting a forest drive, or expecting to report at a jeep gate for a walking site. Read the permit carefully before travel and match the site to the experience you actually booked.
Matching gate to accommodation
Once the gate is fixed by the booking, the sensible order of planning is:
- Check which zones the official calendar offers for your date.
- Match the offered zone to your base city and expected drive time.
- Confirm the vehicle arrangement for that zone's gate.
- Add a buffer so the group reaches the gate 20 minutes before the last entry timing.
- Print the permit and carry the identity document used for booking.
The date, zone and shift guide covers the selection decision, while our which gate guide explains how to read a confirmation that is unclear. Gate amenities and parking are covered in the gate facilities guide, and general travel routes sit on our how to reach page.
What a gate does and does not tell you
The gate tells you where to report, when the entry window closes and which range you will drive. It does not tell you what you will see. The reserve describes the park as not a zoo and does not guarantee sightings, and no gate location changes that.
Gate choice is a logistics decision: transfer time, road conditions, parking, reporting buffer and the zone your calendar actually offered. Treat it that way and the rest of the plan becomes simpler. For the layout behind these entries, see the map and ranges guide, and for the wider district picture see where Rajaji National Park is located.
Safari gate questions answered
How many jeep safari zones does Rajaji National Park have?
Five, as described on the official reserve site: Chilla, Motichur, Haridwar at Ranipur, Chillawali at Mohand and Ramgarh at Asharodi. Each is reached from its own gate, and the live booking calendar decides which of them can be selected for a given date.
Where is the Chilla safari gate located?
The official zone page places Chilla in Pauri Garhwal district near Haridwar. A Chilla permit is reported at the Chilla entry, so the transfer should be planned from the Haridwar side rather than from a Dehradun-side gate.
Where is the Motichur safari gate located?
The official zone page describes Motichur as near both Dehradun and Haridwar, with its gate on the Dehradun-Haridwar highway. That road position is why it is often convenient for visitors staying on either side of that stretch.
Is Chaurasi Kutiya a jeep safari zone in Rajaji National Park?
No. Chaurasi Kutiya, known for the Beatles Ashram, is published separately as a day visit attraction that is walked rather than driven. It is not one of the five jeep safari zones, so a jeep safari permit must name one of the zone gates.
Which gate should I report to for my Rajaji safari?
The gate that matches the zone printed on your permit. The reserve says the vehicle is provided from the relative gate, and the booking page asks visitors to arrive 20 minutes before the last entry timing, with late arrivals after the last entry potentially not entertained and no refund.
